At Least 6 Killed After School Bus Crashes In Tennessee

The district attorney told reporters five children died on the scene, while another died at the hospital. At least 23 patients were taken to the hospital, the Chattanooga Fire Department said.

A school bus crashed Monday afternoon in Tennessee, killing at least six children, the district attorney told local reporters on the scene. Five children died at the scene, while another died at the hospital, he said.

At least 23 patients were taken to the hospital, according to the Chattanooga Fire Department.

Police Chief Fred Fletcher said at a news conference that 35 students were aboard the bus when it crashed on Tally Road around 3:30 p.m. He said the bus was the only vehicle involved in the crash.

The bus driver for Woodmore Elementary School was being questioned, Chattanooga Police said. The students on board ranged from kindergarten to fifth grade.

"We've had a tragic event involving a school bus down in Hamilton County," Gov. Bill Haslam said in a statement. "We're going to do everything we can to assist in any way. It's a sad situation anytime there's a school bus with children involved, which there is in this case. We will do everything we can to assist in what I think is going to be a very sad situation."
