Five people were stabbed at the University of California, Merced, Wednesday morning. The suspect was shot and killed by campus police, Lorena Anderson, a school spokesperson confirmed to BuzzFeed News.
The university previously said all the victims were students, but later issued a correction saying not all five were students.
The victims are being treated for stab wounds and are conscious, according to the university. Two of the victims were airlifted to area hospitals, while three were treated on campus.
The incident took place in front of the Classroom and Office Building (COB) before 8 a.m.
UC Merced officials did not release the identity of the suspect or the victims.
The campus was closed and classes were cancelled. Students and faculty were later allowed to leave the campus.
Authorities planned to release more information on the incident at a news conference later in the day.
The university, which opened in 2004, has 6,685 students. The rural campus is located just over 100 miles south of Sacramento.
The story was updated to reflect that all five victims were not students. The university previously stated they were.
