A standoff between a lone gunman with a high-powered rifle and police forced the San Diego International Airport to close off access to incoming flights, potentially causing a major ripple effect from the popular tourist destination.
A standoff in the nearby Bankers Hill neighborhood north of downtown started shortly after 9 a.m. when officers responding to a domestic violence call came under fire.
The immediate neighborhood surrounding the apartment complex at 2445 Brant St. was put on lockdown and the residents were evacuated from their units. There were no initial reports of injuries and the gunman had been confined to his apartment, police said.
Still, San Diego International Airport, which is one of only a few major airports to have a single runway, announced it was implementing a ground stop for all arriving aircraft until the situation was under control. That means all aircraft destined for the city will remain grounded, potentially causing delays at departure points.
The ground stop was also interfering with departures at the San Diego airport, which was warning passengers to check with their airlines for potential delays.
Arriving reporters on the scene were able to record some of the initial gunfire.
One woman on the scene told the local NBC affiliate that she heard a large boom that sounded like it came from a big gun.
"It was scary, made me get goosebumps," she said.
