Arizona Game and Fish wildlife officials said in a YouTube post that it's not known how long the young buck had been in the cold water, unable to climb the steep concrete walls of the canal near Lake Pleasant. However, it was clear that he was tired and in distress.

The agency got several calls regarding the trapped deer, but by the time wildlife officers arrived, a rescue attempt was already underway.

Some local cowboys had been trying to lasso the struggling deer, but without much luck from the side, so they took advantage of a bridge.
