Two police officers in the Des Moines, Iowa, area have been shot dead while sitting in their cars in what the city's police department described as "ambush-style attacks" in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The two shootings took place in separate locations three miles away from one another, twenty minutes apart.

According to a news release by City of Des Moines Police Department's Sgt. Paul Parizek, the first officer was from Urbandale Police Department and was found following reports of shots fired near 70th and Aurora at 1.06 a.m. local time.

Exactly 20 minutes later, a Des Moines Police Department officer was found shot at the intersection of Merle Hay Road and Sheridan Drive.

Parizek confirmed both officers are deceased, and that suspect information is being developed.

In a joint news conference with Urbandale Police Department at around 5 a.m. local time, a visibly emotional Sgt. Parizek confirmed: "In all appearances, it looks like these officers were ambushed," adding that they had been shot while sitting in their cars.

“We’re just a few hours into this, it doesn’t look like there was any interaction between these officers and whoever the characters are who shot them while they sat in their cars. And that’s the best we’ve got so far: they were shot in their cars.”

Parizek said next of kin were being notified, and no details as to the identities of the deceased officers would be released at this time.

He said that “as soon as we have suspect information it’s coming out,” and that there was still a "clear and present danger" to police officers while the suspect is still at large, adding that officers have been paired up in light of the shootings.
