Ohio Gov. John Kasich has vetoed a bill banning abortions after 6 weeks, and signed into law a second bill banning the procedure after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
The 6-week ban, known as the "Heartbeat Bill," would have prohibited abortions after a fetal heartbeat could be heard — which is usually after about six weeks and before many women are aware they are pregnant.
The second ban, called the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, will ban abortions after 20 weeks of gestation, except in the cases of threat of death or “irreversible impairment” of the pregnant person’s body.
Under the law, doctors who perform an abortion after 20 weeks could also be prosecuted.
The "heartbeat bill" had caused an uproar among anti-abortion and abortion rights advocates alike, including protests outside Kasich's Ohio residence.
