Three Missing After "Unbelievably Big" Colorado Mudslide

Authorities are searching for three people after a massive mudslide hit Western Colorado following a long weekend of rain in the area.


Three are missing after a mudslide — estimated to be 4 miles long, 2 miles wide, and 250 feet deep — swept through Mesa County in western Colorado on Sunday night, according to the Mesa County Sheriff's Department.

The slide happened along Salt Creek Road near Vega State park, which is about 40 miles west of Grand Junction


"This slide is unbelievably big," Mesa County Sheriff's Department said.


The slide area was described by deputies as "unstable" on Sunday night, and they estimated a large ridge was sliding for most of the day. Heavy rains are thought to have contributed to the severity of the mudslide.


The area is remote, with no cellphone reception. According to the Denver Post, no structures were reported damaged, but officials expected a better assessment of the damage on Monday.


The three people missing we not named, but are said to be residents of the Mesa County area.
