The blaze began after 7 p.m. Wednesday in San Francisco’s Mission District.
The fire began after 7 p.m. in a Mission District building that housed dozens of families, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The fire killed one man, and six other people were treated for smoke inhalation, according to NBC 11.
Crews also rescued at least 12 people, according to the Chronicle.
After several hours of fighting the blaze, crews appeared to have it under control. However, the fire then spread and by 10 p.m. was still not contained.
"When I got on scene, crews had a very good handle on (the fire), but it immediately ran the attic" Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White told the Chronicle.
