Investigators are questioning the 14-year-old relative in the death of the baby girl inside an apartment.
Police responded to a "person in danger" call at 6:13 a.m. on S. Westmoreland Road in the Redbird neighborhood. When officers arrived, they were met by Dallas Fire and Rescue, who stated a 3-month-old female child was deceased inside the residence, Dallas PD said in a statement.
Two teenagers were also at the scene, Sgt. Warren Mitchell said at a press briefing.
The preliminary investigation suggests that one of the baby's teenage relatives, a 14-year-old girl, drowned the child while the mother was away from the residence, police said. She is in police custody for questioning.
The other teen is being treated as a witness to the incident.
The child's mother was at work during the time of the incident.
"It breaks my heart, anytime you respond to a call [of} someone so innocent, no one more innocent than an infant child." Mitchell told reporters. "My heart goes out to the family."
This is a developing story. Check back later for updates.
