Tropical Storm Bertha Forms In The Atlantic, Prompts Warnings

A tropical storm warning has been issued for Barbados, Dominica, and St. Lucia as Bertha moves toward the Caribbean.


Tropical Storm Bertha formed in the Atlantic late Thursday with max sustained winds of 45 mph. As of 11 p.m. ET the storm was located 275 miles east of Barbados.

The storm was moving WNW at 20 mph, the National Hurricane Center said.

1 to 3 inches of rain are generally expected on Puerto Rico. Higher accumulations up to 5 inches are possible on Puerto Rico's southeast side and on the Virgin Islands.

Bertha is forecast to approach Barbados on Friday, then pass south of Puerto Rico on Saturday before heading toward the Bahamas.

While forecasts could change, the storm was not expected to become a hurricane.


"The environment surrounding Bertha is not particularly favorable for significant strengthening during the next two days due to modest westerly shear and limited mid-level moisture," the National Hurricane Center said.
