Boston Police Officer Charged With Assaulting Uber Driver

A 16-year veteran of the Boston Police Department has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the charges. He is also accused of stealing the driver’s car.

A 16-year veteran of the Boston Police Department was arrested after an Uber driver claimed he physically assaulted him and drove off with his car.


According to a statement from the police department, at approximately 2:45 a.m. Sunday, an Uber driver was dropping off Michael Doherty in South Boston. Doherty accused the driver of dropping him off in the wrong location and began yelling at him.


The driver said he was then physically assaulted and exited the vehicle as he tried to escape. Once the driver's seat was empty, the assailant allegedly jumped in the front seat and drove away.


The driver flagged down another motorist who helped drive after his car. When the assailant stopped, he allegedly knocked the Uber driver to the ground and continued to hit him and utter racial slurs against him, according to the police report obtained by the Boston Globe .


The assailant fled before police arrived, but was later arrested. He was charged with assault and battery and using a motor vehicle without authority.


Doherty has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the charges filed against him.
