Federal prosecutors allege that Brian Karl Brimager, 37, started physically abusing his girlfriend, 42-year-old Yvonne Baldelli, shortly after renting a room on a small remote island of Isla Carenero in the Panamanian archipelago of Bocas del Toro.

Almost immediately, prosecutors say he started emailing a former girlfriend to discuss returning to California to help raise their daughter.

It wasn't long before prosecutors say his relationship with Baldelli devolved into physical abuse. Then in November 2011, Brimager allegedly killed Baldelli, dismembered her body, and disposed of the body parts in the jungle just off the coast of the island.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, within a few hours of the killing, Brimager used Baldelli's computer to search "washing mattress" and "washing mattress blood stain."

Prosecutors allege Brimager eventually dumped the mattress in the ocean.

From there, federal prosecutors say, Brimager engaged in an elaborate cover-up, including using Baldelli's laptop and personal email account to make her family believe she was traveling to Costa Rica to live with a man she'd met.

Brimager then allegedly withdrew money from her accounts both in and out of Costa Rica to make it appear as if she was there.
