North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory sued the Department of Justice over the federal government's interpretation that the state's recently-passed "bathroom law" violates federal civil rights laws.

Last week the Department of Justice sent a letter to McCrory saying the controversial law — which bans transgender people access to restrooms that match their gender identity in government buildings and schools — violates Title VII.

"The state is engaging in a pattern or practice of discrimination against transgender state employees," U.S. Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta wrote in a letter to Gov. Pat McCrory.

Gupta gave McCrory until May 9 to respond with a solution to "remedy the situation."

McCrory responded Monday suing "Loretta Lynch, in her official capacity as United States Attorney General, and Vanita Gupta, in her official capacity as Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General, for their radical reinterpretation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which would prevent plaintiffs from protecting the bodily privacy rights of state employees while accommodating the needs of transgendered state employees."
