U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry made the rounds on cable news shows on Sunday morning, but was caught off guard after Fox News' Chris Wallace played a clip of Kerry recorded in the Fox News studio just before the on-air segment.

"While you were on camera and while on microphone," Wallace said, "you spoke to one of your top aides between the interviews about the situation in Israel."

Wallace presented the hot-mic clip in reference to the "14 Israelis" killed in a recent operation in the Gaza Strip. Recent reports indicate that number of Israeli soldiers killed is actually 13.

In the clip, Kerry is on the phone with an unidentified person, and keeps repeating: "It's a hell of a pinpoint operation."

He seems to be referencing Israel expanding its mission in Gaza, although Israeli leaders said earlier the country's operations would be "limited"

"It's escalating significantly," Kerry's aide says. Kerry replies: "We've got to get over there. I think we should go tonight," noting that it is "crazy" to be "sitting around."

After playing him the segment, Wallace asks if Kerry is "upset that the Israelis are going too far?"

"It's very difficult in these situations, obviously" Kerry responded.
