The deaths happened at a government-run health camp in Bilaspur in the central state of Chhattisgarh.
Eight women have died and thirty more have been admitted to hospital after undergoing sterilization surgery at a government-organized health camp in Chhattisgarh state, central India, the BBC reported.
Thirty of the women admitted to the hospital are in critical condition, NDTV reported.
The tubectomy operations were carried out on 83 women in six hours by the camp's one doctor and his assistant in Pendari village. Sixty women fell ill shortly after, officials said.
People in the village have alleged the operations were carried out hurriedly. Officials have denied any negligence in the procedures.
Speaking to the Agence France-Presse, Bilaspur district commissioner Sonmani Borah said: "Reports of a drop in pulse, vomiting and other ailments started pouring in on Monday from the women who underwent surgery. Since Monday eight women have died and 64 are in various hospitals."
Borah added that authorities would investigate the incident.

Such sterilization camps are not uncommon in India. More than 4 million such operations were performed in 2013 to 2014, according to the government. The camps form part of a long-running effort to control India's booming population.
The camps are held in Chahattisgarh between the months of October and February. Women who undergo the surgery are given 1,400 rupees ($23) by the government, The Guardian reported.
