Hikers Forced To Evacuate By Helicopter As Wildfire Spreads In Yosemite

About 100 hikers had to be airlifted to safety Sunday, including 40 people from the top of Half Dome, as flames quickly spread in the national park.


A small wildfire sparked months ago near Yosemite National Park exploded in size Sunday as strong winds pushed the blaze to 700 acres, forcing evacuations.

The blaze, which officials are calling the Meadow Fire, began spreading around noon Sunday in the park's backcountry as winds fanned flames in dry trees and brush.
